Choosing the Right Host and Server

There are several key stages all businesses must go through when setting up operations online. The very first step would normally be deciding on, and then registering, a domain name for the website.

The next stage is to source a quality web design agency that is able to work with the company towards producing an attractive, informative and usable front-end portal through which customers can access all they need to know about the products and services on offer.

However, the third step in the website launching process is every bit as important to get right as the first two stages; and that is hosting. It’s important to know the basics and what the implications are in terms of using one hosting solution over another, and what to look for in a reliable web host.

Indeed, in the modern, web-centric business world, investing in the company’s web infrastructure is crucial and should never be compromised with cheap hosting solutions that are good at promising but not quite so good at delivering on them. Be very wary of hosting companies that oversell their services - if it sounds too good to be true, then it most probably is. If a hosting service seems too cheap, then it may mean that they’re cutting costs elsewhere in the company, which doesn’t bode well for its future.

In terms of choosing a web host in the first instance, it’s always a good idea to check how long they have been in business for. If they have been around for a number of years, then it’s likely that they are well managed, which - obviously - is a good sign. In addition, it can prove worthwhile to obtain customer references for third party verification of the hosting company's claims.

Then there is the issue of what type of server to use. Some companies choose to go with a shared server, which is generally considered to be the most economical hosting option, given that server maintenance costs are split between every company that is on it.

However, a dedicated server is a useful option for those businesses that are seeking a more flexible hosting service. Organisations can exert full control over the server specifications, including the choice of operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and the type of hardware that is used.

The administration of the server can be provided by the hosting company too and for companies that really want to make the most of their online operations, going down the dedicated server route can prove the most beneficial way to go, with the increased return on investment negating the higher cost of having their own server.

And for businesses that are seeking to optimise and streamline their website so that it is the best it can possibly be, it is important to realise that by investing in their IT infrastructure from the back-end to the front-end, this will go some way towards ensuring their profitability is maximised in the long-term.
